Article: Pitching your art to an art consultant should be the last thing you do
Pitching your art to an art consultant should be the last thing you do
I've been talking with artists who are really enthusiastic about working with consultants, but aren't yet prepared with the right materials. They don't yet have a cohesive body of work, a clear artist statement, or, if they want to license, don't have high-res images of their work.
Pitching your art to a consultant signals to them that you are 100% ready to work on a project.
When you're pitching your art to a consultant, you are saying to them that you believe you work would genuinely be a good fit for their clients, and that you're ready to work on a project with them.
But if you're pitching your art before you have the essentials in place, then it's like trying to bake a cake without the basic ingredients.
They'll be able to tell if you're just slapping things together.
So, it's important to take some time to honestly assess where you are in your career.
Assess where you are, and what you need to prepare
Here are just some of the things I recommend you have ready before you submit.
- A cohesive body of work (This is the most important one! If you haven't found your artistic voice yet, this is what you will focus on first.)
- A clear artist statement
- A CV (Not all consultants require them, but some do)
- A website that is easy to navigate and learn more about what you make, look at your past work, see what services you offer, and be able to reach out to you.
- A social media handle where they can learn more about your work (this does not replace a website!)
- Have your originals, prints, and commission prices listed on your website or at the very least "prices start at"
- If you offer commissions, do you have your process clearly thought out? Can you easily give them a quote (including shipping) and general timeline for a specific project?
- If licensing, do you have high-resolution images of your work? Do you know what the max print size is? Can you give them a quote if they ask for one?
Your Next Steps
Once you have everything in place, then you're ready to submit. And if you need someone to look over your submissions before you send them, I offer Art Consultant Submission Reviews.
